The six survivors

AUSTRALIA'S SIX SURVIVORS OF WWI:

NSW (2):

- Marcel Caux, 105, wounded three times on the western front, kept his war service
quiet until he was 98.

- Gilbert Bennion, 105, training officer discharged before seeing overseas service

VIC (2):

- John Ross, 105, wireless operated who enlisted as an 18-year-old near war's end

- William Allan, 104, the last seaman, served in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Also
served in WWII

QLD (1):

- Ted Smout, 106, medical officer, served in France 1916-18

WA (1):

- Peter Casserly, 106, railway engineer who served as a sapper on the western front.



AUSTRALIANS IN WORLD WARS:

WWI 1914-1918: 331,781 troops, 59,512 killed, 166,815 wounded, 4,084 taken prisoner.

WW II 1939-45: 396,661 troops, 28,238 killed, 56,873 wounded, 22,264 taken prisoner.
